An updated edition of Magill's Survey of Science: Space Exploration Series (LJ 9/15/90), this work provides a general overview of the nation's manned and unmanned space programs and major NASA and military research and launch centers. Nearly 200 essays (37 of them new to this edition) discuss specific programs as well as the broader social, political, and policy issues affecting the space program as a whole. The essays attempt to give general readers the historical context of each program or issue, complete with lessons learned and the major personnel involved. Appendixes include a listing of space-related web sites that provide valuable information for the researcher. Unfortunately, many essays contain factual errors that betray a clear lack of understanding of events and the technology involved, severely hampering the usefulness of this set for research purposes. A far better choice would be the projected three-volume Exploring the Unknown: Selected Documents in the History of the U.S. Civilian Space Program (Vol. 1: Organizing for Exploration, NASA, 1995; Vol. 2: External Relationships, NASA, 1996). This massive three-volume reference represents a substantial updating of the first edition (1996), which was itself a heavily revised version of the 1989 publication . The current work contains 237 essays on the major space programs, crewed and uncrewed missions, satellites, and probes from the earliest missions to the present, as well as overviews of space centers and launch sites, technologies, and relevant issues. The essays are alphabetically arranged, are from 2,000 to 5,000 words, and each is signed and includes a bibliography. Contributors are from academic institutions all over the US or are independent scholars; the editor, who has given new attention to each essay and bibliography, is a long-time historian of the space program. This is a thorough reference of interest to students and members of the industry seeking detailed knowledge of various aspects of the space program as well as historians who need a place to begin.
