What a surprise! I do not know exactly what I expected; however, this is just a great way to learn science. There are four chapters covering cells. They are: Building Blocks of Life, Cells Working Together, Cells Up Close, and Cells in Action. Every page is filled with science facts and clever illustrations that add humor as well as explanations. Of course, the Vampire is very interested in learning about the red blood cells. This way of talking about cells would be perfect for both slow and high level learners. There are two double-page illustrated spreads of animal cells and plant cells which are fascinating. The first covers animal's cells and it provides excellent illustrations with vocabulary definitions for words like Lysosomes, Cytoplasm, Mitochonodria and many more. The second is about plants covering vocabulary such as Cell Membrane, Vacuoles, and Chloroplasts. This book is great for both the young and older reader and is perfect for a school library or classroom. It is also great for "hooking" a child's interest in science. With the Vampire's comments, the text has both facts and humor. One illustration has the vampire saying, "...but animal cells taste better!" The author includes a Glossary, Internet sites, and other books covering the same topic. This book is a must have for a science room. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
