About the Author

Martin Kay is professor of linguistics at Stanford University and an honorary professor at the University of Saarland, Germany. He is a past president of the Association for the Computational Linguistics and resigned the chairmanship of the International Committee on Computational Linguistics in 2014, having served in that capacity for thirty years.

Verbmobile is that little electronic device you carry to an international meeting to translate your language into another language as you speak. Don't worry, no one else has one yet either. The German Ministry of Research and Technology has been working towards developing it, however, and asked Stanford's Center for the Study of Language and Information to assess the state of the art in the relevant fields of science and technology and to chart a course to the first prototype. What constitutes a prototype is one of the issues addressed. So far, the work is accessible to readers with little sophistication in either language or computers. No index. Annotation c.
