About the Author

Isabel Vargas Lizano, known as Chavela Vargas, was born in Costa Rica. She left her country in her adolescence to establish herself in Mexico. She recorded numerous records with her own songs and those of other composers. She has performed in many international venues, such as the Paris Olympics, Carnegie Hall, and the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico. In 2000, the Spanish Council of Ministers bestowed upon her the Cross of Isabella the Catholic, and in 2009 the government of Mexico City awarded her the Distinguished Citizen Medal. Maria Cortina was born in Mexico City. She has written for many newspapers and numerous national and international publications, as well as the electronic media.
