About the Author

Vicki Cobb is the well-known author of more than eighty-five highly entertaining nonfiction books for children, including Bet You Can't, which won the New York Academy of Sciences Children's Science Book Award. Currently, she is president and founder of INK Think Tank: Nonfiction Authors in Your Classroom. She has won numerous awards, including a Sibert Honor for I Face the Wind and a special Lifetime Achievement Prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012. There is nothing dull about the science questions in this book. Hundreds of hands-on science experiments are described in these pages, many of which require little set up. The children who read and try these projects won't become experts in any particular scientific field, but they will know some of the joys of investigation. Some of them are short. Ready? Here's one: "Roll your eyeballs so that you are looking up as high as you can. Do not tilt your head backward. Now close your eyes. Keep your eyeballs in the raised position and try to open your eyes." That's it. That's the whole project. The explanation (or "Insider Information") says that it is impossible to open your eyes because the muscles needed to raise the eyelids are already working at keeping the eyes rolled up. These tricks, as the authors call them, are divided into eight categories: "The Human Wonder" (safe tricks about your body), "Don't Try This at Home!" (experiments for outdoors), "Going Public" (challenges that take more than one person), "Fluid Feats" (investigations of liquids), "Energy Entrapments" (projects with energy), "Matter of Mystery" (secrets to mystify friends), "Forces of Deception" (projects that don't work like we expect them to), and "Mathematical Duplicity." Readers will get hooked with just one or two of these projects. Fortunately, there are many more. All of the projects are doable and the science behind them is explained in a kid-accessible manner. Children can make nutty putty or a sandwich-bag bomb, use a magnet to extract the iron from breakfast cereal, or tie a knot in a chicken bone. Experiments that require adult supervision are noted. Black-and-white line drawings add humor and clarify instructions.
