Description: This is a comprehensive atlas of pediatric dermatology that has been in print for more than 40 years. The first edition debuted in 1975, with subsequent updates in 1990, 1998, 2008, and most recently, in 2017.
Purpose: According to the authors, the aim is to complement a pediatric dermatology textbook, and to be of practical use for any healthcare provider involved in the care of children. These are worthy objectives, which are, for the most part, met.
Audience: The intended audience includes pediatricians, dermatologists, and general practitioners. The information the book presents would benefit nondermatologists or dermatology residents the most, rather than seasoned dermatology practitioners. It would be extremely illustrative for medical students or residents in a pediatric or pediatric dermatology rotation.
Features: The book covers the vast array of what is seen on the skin of babies and children. It is divided into 30 sections that range from disorders specific to pediatric patients, such as genodermatoses and neonatal dermatoses, to conditions affecting the adult population as well, such as infectious diseases, neoplastic disorders, and specific dermatologic disorders. There is a pertinent section on cutaneous manifestations of HIV disease and a unique section on skin signs of child abuse. What is best about the book is how complete it manages to be in a relatively compact format, making it an easy go-to reference during a busy clinic. The illustrations are of high quality with good didactic value.
Assessment: This is an extremely handy guide to skin disorders in the young patient. It is concise enough to be read at one sitting as a review and complete enough to be used to generate a differential diagnosis at the bedside. Since the field of pediatric dermatology is continually evolving, this update is justified, coming almost 10 years after the previous edition.
