CHAPTER 1

Early one morning, just as the sun beamed brightly into the lake. Mrs. Finn went into her son's room to wake him. "Samuel Finn, it is time to get up now." "We have a very big day to prepare for. Tomorrow is your very first day of school."

"Awe Mom" ... said Sam. "Why can't you just call me Sam and why do I have to go to school anyway. I'm a betta, everything I need Dad has already taught me and the rest I was born with." "One man is not an island, Sam or should I say "One betta is not an island, replied Mrs. Finn. "Now hurry and get ready, we must be leaving soon."

Sam wondered what his mama meant by "One betta not being an island." So he asked on their way to Rock-N-Rock Reef Mall. "Mama?" said Sam "Yes, what is it dear? Said Mrs. Finn "What does one betta is not an island mean?" "One betta is not an island; Sam means that people need other people. We cannot survive alone." "Its like when you are outside playing and your fin gets caught in the rock sometimes, you need Daddy to come and help you right? Asked Mrs. Finn "Yes, I tried to do it by myself but it is hard." Said Sam "Of course it is, that is why it is important that you go to school and learn things that maybe Daddy forgot to tell you and it is very important that you make friends."

Sam thought about it and a few friends would be nice, maybe school won't be so bad after all.

"Sam, are you ready for your first day at school? Asked Mr. Finn as they ate dinner. "Kind of Daddy" replied Sam "I'm excited about meeting new friends but I don't know if they will like me." Said Sam "Well Sam, I'm sure they will, after all you are a very likeable kinda guy. And plus you are my son, Replied Mr. Finn Sam smiled and wondered how his Daddy always knew the right thing to say to make him feel better.

Later that night as Sam was preparing for bed. He thought about all the things that would happen the next day at school. Some things made him happy and some things made him sad, but he was determined to show his mama that he could be brave. Early the next morning, Sam arose to the smell of plank cakes and eggs, which was his favorite breakfast. His mama always knew how to start his day off, right. Sam decided he would get up and get himself ready, since it was the first day of school. He wanted to make sure he looked his best.
