About the Author

Linda Granfield is the award-winning author of nearly thirty nonfiction titles for young readers. Granfield’s writing brings history to life with such works as In Flanders Fields: The Story of the Poem by John McCrae, High Flight: A Story of World War II, and the acclaimed Amazing Grace: The Story of the Hymn. Linda Granfield grew up in a big family north of Boston, Massachusetts, and now makes her home in Toronto.

Jennifer Herbert is noted for her keen sense of color and design. Her talent has been sought after by industries such as advertising, publishing, film, and fine art. Her lyrical paintings created for publications throughout North America are exhibited in various art galleries. Born in Bennington, Vermont, Jennifer now works out of Toronto.

This guessing book is set up so that there are many clues as to "what I am" on one page (followed by many options as to "what I am"). When the reader turns the page, the answer as to "what I am" is given with more information about the particular answer. Most of the time, the clues are very simple, followed by options that have one that is spot on and easy to guess (and with pictures of all of the "objects" in the illustrations, usually one can guess as to what is right and what is obviously wrong). For example, one question reads: "What am I? I am round. I have a hold in the middle. I am fried and I'm sweet. Can you guess? A bagel? A candy? A ball of twine? A doughnut? A vase?/I am a doughnut. I am made of flour, sugar, yeast, and fat. Sometimes, I have colored sprinkles all over me. You can eat the doughnut ‘holes,' too!" Although young readers might not care that doughnuts are made of "fat," they will have fun guessing the answers to each riddle in this cartoon-like illustrated guessing game. K-Gr 2 This beginning riddle book is something a little different for this audience. On each spread, a few clues are offered along with the questions, "What am I?" "Can you guess?" There are five choices, all of which are depicted in the facing illustration. A page turn reveals the correct answer and gives an additional description of the object. The riddles feature commonly found items, randomly arranged: a doughnut, a backpack, a bicycle. The gouache illustrations are stylized graphic cartoons. Although the book is slim and simple, it is more than enough to introduce youngsters to the topic.
