He has more than 40 years’ experience creating science activities and programs, developing curricula, and writing articles and books, including the NSTA Press publication The Everyday Science Sourcebook and the I Wonder Why series.

This book is part of the “I Wonder Why” series of science books. Like other books in the series, it is for young learners beginning to explore and question the world they live in. They want to know why and how things work. This book focuses on the questions of what makes different sounds and why. This is not a fact book that will put children to sleep, instead these question are dealt with inside the story of the twins Jane and Jim. As the twins walk home, they are curious about why sounds can be startling, soothing or mysterious. They learn about vibrations, pitch, and volume as they search to find the answers for why sounds can be different. The illustrations highlight the different objects making the sounds along with sound words that children can make along with the story.
