PreS-These three volumes provide the groundwork for early bilingual language learning. The colorful and attractive illustrations (by different artists) feature multicultural children in many different situations. Each page provides both the English and Spanish words for the concepts featured. Many new words are introduced, from weather vocabulary to time concepts and opposites. The pronunciation guides at the end provide very helpful assistance in both languages so that native speakers in either language can use these books. Rosa-Mendoza has turned out another serviceable, but unexceptional, entry in this bilingual board book series. In this title, a little boy takes us through his day as a kindergartner. We see him wake, take the bus, go to school, eat dinner, wash, and go to bed. The narrator does not possess heaps of character and Calitri's illustrations do not give him, or the other people in his life, much expression beyond a demure smile. The book does do a good job in making the notation of each hour very clear. I do not recommend using the glossary as it seems to have been composed by someone with an American accent in Spanish and a Spanish accent in English. The glossary imposes each language's phonology upon the other's indiscriminately and offers pronunciations guides like, "3:00—sri o-klok" and "6:00—saeehs ehn poon-toh." This book is volume seven in the "English/Spanish Foundations" series and won the Writer's Digest Certificate of Merit. 2001, Me+Mi Publishing, Ages 6 mo. to 6.
