When Fred the Snake and Friends explore Charleston

The first Fred book "When Fred the Snake got Squished and Mended" tells how the friendly snake was sent as a present to the young boy by Jungle Jim. Fred became Fred-Fred temporarily after an accident crossing the road. Happily, the doctor was able to mend him with some special thread that brave Jim collected from beneath a fierce rhino. In the second book "When Fred the Snake goes to School" , Fred becomes popular when he twists himself into many useful things for the playground, like a soccer goal and a water-slide. But he became lonely and wrote to Jungle Jim, asking him to come and visit his new home. The third book "When Jungle Jim comes to visit Fred the Snake" tells how Jim and many forest friends brave the ocean journey, to arrive in South Carolina. Now, in the fourth book "When Fred the Snake and friends explore Charleston", we follow Fred, the boy, his Mama, Jim and all the jungle visitors as they check out the tourist sights of the city of Charleston. They took a carriage ride, cruised the market and rainbow row, visited the children's museum and fort sumter, splashed in the fountain at Waterfront park, gazed in pretty shop windows, ate moules frites at Rue de Jean ,and took a helicopter ride over the city and big bridge. After that they were tired.

About the Author

Peter Cotton is a semi-retired Professor of Medicine at the Medical university of South Carolina. He grew up in England, but moved to USA 30 years ago. Until that time he did not know that he was named after a rabbit. He was familiar with the British author Beatrix Potter who wrote about Peter Rabbit, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, but Petercottontail is an American abbreviation. He wrote about Fred-Fred many years ago for his then small children to teach them about the dangers of crossing the road (and getting squished), but thought no more about it until those "children" had there own small ones, and asked "what happened to Fred-Fred". We were lucky enough to find a marvelous illustrator- Bonnie Lemaire- and a publisher. The first book "When Fred the Snake got Squished and Mended" was popular and won the New York Best Rhythmic Book StoryJam prize. Two others followed, and the series won the Moonbeams Children's book bronze medal in 2014.
Dr Cotton likes to do book readings at schools and book stores. He is deeply fortunate to live with his lovely wife, Marion, on Dewees Island, near Charleston, SC. Between them they have 4 "children", 8 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He is a good golfer but poor fisherman.

Bonnie Lemaire began her career as a freelance illustrator with her first promotional post card in 1989. She graduated from Ontario College of Art's communication and design program in 1992 and took a position as artist/designer with Ganz and Brothers Canada. It was a valuable experience, catapulting her into a successful freelance career where she applied all her experience, hard work and versatility into a variety of new directions. Bonnie has seen her work utilized in many different projects, including home décor, giftware, sticker and toy design and children's books.Bonnie's eternal optimism is the foundation of every drawing. Flowing from her pencils and tips of her brushes into her creative and eye catching pieces, comical and curious creatures dance on the page. Children's book illustration is her passion.
Integrating eccentric creations within fantastical stories brings smiles to small faces, and delight to her readers all over the world.Bonnie is now an award winning full time Children's book illustrator working from her home in small Hamlet in Ontario Canada.
