About the Author

Karl Meyer is a writer, radio naturalist, and teacher. He writes a biweekly newspaper column called The Wild Place, as well as articles for a variety of regional and national publications. He is the author of Storey's Wild Animals of North America, which received a 2008 Teachers' Choice Award for Children’s Books.

All animals add something special to our planet. They are an important part of keeping the Earth healthy. The more we know about wild animals, the better job we can do to protect their habitats. Wild places feed our spirit as well. Thirty posters of wild animals of North America are included in this collection. The posters can be pulled out of the book and displayed. No matter where you live in North America, there are wild animals close to you. However, North America is a large territory so not all of these animals can be found in any one location. Many people travel long distances to see some of these animals. It is easier to find animals in the wild if you know something about their habits and where they live. On the back of each full page photograph the animal is identified. Information is provided about where it lives and what makes it special. We learn what it eats and something about its babies. A caribou calf is born in the spring and if its a male can grow to as much as 600 pounds. Raccoons eat everything and there is probably one near you right now. They like to live near water and often wash their food. Harbor Seals are one of the most common seals of the North American coast. They frequently gather in groups of 100 or more. These groups are called colonies. There are photographs of a coyote, a fox, a grizzly bear, bald eagles, a mountain lion and a humpback whale. Beautiful reproductions make this a very special collection that should be framed and appreciated.
