The Earth has many ways of rejuvenating itself from year to year; sometimes, humans assist in this process; and sometimes the process itself is particularly destructive. Wildfires are regular events and serve to help a landscape start back from the beginning. However, when these fires come too close to human habitation, the effects can be devastating. National Geographic Kids does an excellent job combining information, imagery, and interesting content to reinforce youngsters’ interest in non-fiction titles. As in the other books in the “National Geographic Readers” series, there is a letter to parents and educators at the beginning of the book reiterating the importance of reading nonfiction and how to encourage this with their children and students. An index and glossary, standard in higher-level nonfiction titles, is found at the end. Each page is filled with high color imagery, large text, and varying layouts to keep readers interested in the text. Any technical terms or new vocabulary are pulled out and addressed, factoids are highlighted in yellow boxes, and there is a quiz at the end of the book to verify retention of information. While not a requirement, National Geographic Kids has created a series of prizes that can be earned for reading each book in the series.
