For readers between kindergarten and grade three, “Blastoff! Readers” in the “Animal Safari” series are bright and colorful introductions to scientific content with attractive, realistic illustrations. Here, the wombats’ habitat, food, and predatorsthose animals that chase wombatsare the topics featured. Family life is clearly pictured for these kangaroo-like animals that dig burrows and then use the strength in their legs and wide feet to dig for food such as grass, roots, and tree bark. They also have sharp teeth and run fast to get away from animals which can attack, injure or eat them. Tunneling quickly into deep burrows enables them to use their hefty bodies to block the entrance into their dug out homes. They rest in these burrows during the daylight; but as the night darkens, they begin their search for food. What other animals do they resemble with such low bodies close to the ground, and short ears with large noses? The book offers a glossary, index, and “Learn More” page for additional informed sources on Wombats. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy; Ages 5 to 8.
