Women have made contributions to information technology since the beginning of the industry. Their contributions have not always been acknowledged and many are not common knowledge. The “Major Women in Science” series is designed to rectify this situation and encourage girls to consider careers in science. It is inspiring to read about the computer science achievements made by women in the past as well as the present. One of the most impressive accounts in this book is a biography of Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), a British scientist and mathematician who is recognized as one of the first computer programmers. She translated and annotated documents about an analytical engine, one of the first computers. Her work was pivotal in making future computers more practical. The British Computer Society presents an award every year in her name, and the first computer language was named Ada in honor of her pioneering work in the field. Eight women are highlighted, including the contemporary cryptographer Shafi Goldwasser, who was born in 1958. Her work on interactive and zero-knowledge proofs has precipitated significant advances in practical security applications. Goldwasser is a professor at both MIT and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
