Music is a universal language, a story told in every part of the world, and throughout history. From birth, infants respond to music and rhythm, and their interest in using instruments to create different sounds increases as they strengthen their ability to use them. Woodwind instruments are featured in this installment of the "Instruments and Music" series of educational books, which explains that not all woodwind instruments are made out of wood. From flutes to bagpipes, woodwind instruments of the world are shown in large, bright photographs of the instrument in use. The photos are well focused and clear enough for the child reader to get a good look at the parts of the instrument. Appropriate for very young children, the text is minimal and simple, letting the photographs inspire further questions about the music being played. A very short glossary and index in the back is included for further definition, along with a fun do-it-yourself suggestion for making an instrument at home out of common items. A great addition to an early childhood classroom or elementary music classroom, hopefully accompanied by opportunities to play and hear the real instruments. Reviewer: Carly Reagan
