Continent by continent, this book offers an introduction to how an atlas works and also describes the great variety of things found around the world. It starts off with an instructional page, which provides a key to all the different symbols and colors that are used throughout the book. From there, each spread shows a different part of one of the continents. Each of the seven is displayed in smaller parts. For example, North America is split between "Canada and Alaska," "Western USA," "Eastern USA," and "Mexico." Each spread features a map covered with various pictorial symbols. In the corners of each spread, the pictures are grouped by category: People and Places, Plants and Animals, and Produce and Resources. There are also two random facts on each spread. All in all, the book is a fantastic "Atlas Lite." It is easy to understand because it uses mainly pictures rather than words. The book ends with a glossary and an index of all the countries in the world so that the book can be searched in that way, and not just by continent.
