Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Explore different aspects of how your body works as basic knowledge and general information are given. Well-defined chapter titles, basic sentence structure, and plenty of white space are perfect for early readers. Smaller text boxes placed near images on each page provide thoughtful questions or state additional facts. Photos are crisp and vibrant, diagrams are simple yet informative, and there are images of specific body parts. This is an informative series for the inquisitive reader who wants to know basic facts about how our body works." —Library Media Connection

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell

A book about your digestive system is not something that would the first book pulled off the shelf by an eight year old. However, the vibrant colors and diagrams in this book would hold the interest of a young reader. There are photographs of food traveling from your throat to your stomach. This tube is about ten inches with the scientific measurements of 25 centimeters given in parenthesis afterwards. There is a microphotograph showing the mucus that protects a stomach as well as one showing tiny bits of food that are stuck to the wall of the small intestine. There are many photos and they are clear and illustrative. The book is rich with information and would be an excellent resource for a young researcher learning about the processes of digestion. The reader follows the imagined pizza from the mouth where it is chewed, moistened, and swallowed, to where nutrients are absorbed, to the undigested food. As the muscles push the waste through your large intestine water goes into your cells, making the waste become more solid, called feces. Reading the books would make a young reader feel grown up because there is no talking down or simplistic ideas. Kids always want to know how long it takes for food to travel through the digestive system (about twenty-four hours) and once you have eaten, the body takes care of the rest of the process. Hand washing and good nutrition are also included in this well written book. This informative series is library bound, with a glossary and up to date websites, and would be welcomed in libraries and science teachers' rooms.
