About the Author

CRYSTAL WATANABE (aka Pikko) started making bento boxes for herself as a way to eat small healthy portions. She enjoyed it so much that she now shares her hobby with bento fans worldwide. She lives in Hawaii with her husband and two children. MAKI OGAWA (aka Luckysundae) is a Japanese mom who loves to make cute bento boxes for her two young boys, her husband, and herself. She shares her creations on her blog Cute Obento.

A sequel to Yum-Yum Bento Box: Fresh Recipes for Adorable Lunches, Watanabe and Ogawa return with more creative and cute bento box ideas. This time, the themes are the different seasons, and the authors use colorful food choices and seasonal offerings to reflect this theme. Following the same format as the previous book, a “getting started” section begins the book by explaining tools needed, bento packing basics, natural ways to dye rice, and commonly used ingredients for making faces. Each seasonal section starts with a blurb and list of seasonal foods, such as carrots, peas, and potatoes for spring, and blueberries and strawberries for summer. Each listing includes a full-page photograph of the completed bento box and recipes with ingredients. Some listings even include additional tips. Detailed meat recipes are listed in the back. Several pages of website resources, a glossary, metric conversion page, and index complete the text. A great book for budding chefs and artists, but definitely a steady hand and patience is needed for most of these creative lunches. Reviewer: Shelley Oakley; Ages 6 to 10.
