Instead of taking place at the magical Castle Glower, Saturdays at Sea takes place mainly where its title suggests. Celie, along with some of the Glower family, including Queen Celina, Lilah, and Rolf, as well as their beloved griffins, are visiting the Royal Palace of Grath, home of her sister Lilah’s fiance, Prince Lulath. Unfortunately, they are not having that great of a time. They soon realize that a brand new Ship, which is being constructed from parts of the Castle, also has a mysterious magic of its own that is now affecting the family’s mood and causing homesickness.

They soon realize that a brand new Ship, which is being constructed from parts of the Castle, also has a mysterious magic of its own that is now affecting the family’s mood and causing homesickness.
After many engagement parties and celebrations at the Royal Palace for the couple, the Ship, built as an engagement present for Lilah and Lulath, is finished, and the day is planned for the Ship’s maiden sailing around the small harbor. But suddenly, instead of just a small turn around the harbor, Celie and her family along, with Lulath and the others on the ship for the celebratory sailin,g find themselves out at sea. They are powerless to get the Ship to return or even respond to them at all. It seems to have a mind of its own. What kind of magic is this? And where is it taking them?
Filled with delightful mysteries and high-seas thrills, not to mention unicorns, flying griffins, and lots of little dogs, kids won’t want to put down this exciting book, especially as they try to figure out where the ship is bringing its passengers. Since they only intended to spend a short time aboard, how will they manage a longer trip without a supply of food or water? Lilah hopes they are headed toward an island rumored to be filled with unicorns, so she can rescue them and take them home with her. But then the voyagers hear a worrisome tale warning that the unicorns are in fact not friendly. And they also keep hearing of a dangerous whirlpool in the middle of the ocean that no one has ever escaped from yet. Surely, that is not where the ship is headed. Or is it?
What will happen to Celie, her family, and the griffins? Is the Ship really good or evil? Author Jessica Day George deftly keeps the reader guessing as the book continues to surprise and enchant, all the way to the end. Kids will enjoy this final story in the series set in a imaginary, magical world full of castles, ships, amazing animals, and new lands, where it seems anything is possible. The satisfying conclusion to this book and in turn, the Castle Glower series, will leave readers thankful they shared in the adventures of the Glower family and their griffins.
