It's a rainy night, and granny is snoring on her bed. A sleepy boy plops on top of her, then a dog crawls up and dozes off on top of him. Next, a cat leaps up and settles for a snooze, and a teeny mouse jumps to the tippy top of the slumbering pile. All sleep happily, until a wakeful flea bites the mouse...ouch!!! Wood uses gradual changes in color and perspective, and her gleeful cumulative tale ends in sunshine and play.

A picture-book favorite returns as an oversize board book just right for lap reading: The Napping House by Audrey Wood, illus. by Don Wood. The misty blue artwork that chronicles the "dreaming child," "snoring granny" and a number of additional snoozers seems to bleed off the pages with their rounded corners, until that "wakeful flea" disrupts the sleepers and the sunny colors signal the end of naptime. For its twenty-fifth birthday, the Woods' now classic book has had a makeover with very positive results. Let us start with the inviting new cover. The frame around the cover illustration is now gone. The cat and the mouse have joined granny, the child, and the dog on this "bed in a napping house, where everyone is sleeping." The block text has been replaced with one that suggests freedom of movement and is much more indicative of what is to come inside. A new typeface has been used for the text of the story, as well. Richer colors give greater definition to the objects in the bedroom. The blues have a deeper tone that reflects the grey, rainy day. As the reader turns the pages, she will more easily notice the subtle changes in the light in the room as the rain begins to dissipate until finally the sun comes out in all its glory. A CD accompanies this newly reprinted book. On it is a reading of the story which has specific musical notes for each of the creatures on the bed. There are six original songs about rain and rainy weather, and the story has been set to music as well. The tunes and songs have a soft, dreamlike quality—just right for a napping house. Preschool and kindergarten teachers will discover many ways to use these as extensions of the book. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
