This second installment of the “Survivors” series follows Lucky, a dog who is essentially a loner but who has been helping a pack of former house pets that are trying to survive in the wild after an earthquake. The water is contaminated and there is little food except for what is in an area controlled by a pack of vicious wild dogs. Bella, the head of the “leashed dog” group, encourages Lucky to infiltrate the wild dog pack and learn their ways. Lucky, a loner by choice, reluctantly agrees and is taken in by the wild pack. Lucky is uncomfortable with his deception and grows to like the members of this brutal group. He comes to appreciate the hierarchy of the pack and the harsh rules that govern them. Still, he wants to protect his old friends and must act against his conscience to keep the leashed group safe. The dogs show human characteristics: talking, reasoning, betraying and spying. Still, they are dogs that lick each other’s muzzles, howl at night, and forage for prey to eat. This is a dystopian tale of animal survival, with the hint of humans in the background. The story centers on endurance and depicts a canine community with tiered responsibilities and treatment. In the wild pack, dogs of lower status are treated distinctly different than those of higher rank. There is an interesting dichotomy between the two different packs of dogs and their social strata. Lucky has lived with both and he sees the advantages and disadvantages of each. Hunter has cleverly shown two social orders and how they function. The action is fast-paced and there is cruelty and brutality that may bother dog lovers. Those who love adventure and survival stories will be drawn to the book and come to realize like Lucky, that there are advantages to both packs and that all is not black or white. The cliffhanger ending will surely leave readers waiting for the next book. Reviewer: Sandra Eichelberger; Ages 8 to 12.
    Kirkus Reviews
Following a massive earthquake, leashed dogs and strays alike try to find a way to weather a world turned on end by the catastrophe. Without the longpaws, or humans, the dogs must use both their instincts and their deep tradition of storytelling to make sense of their new lives. This sequel to The Empty City (2012) begins just as Lucky has finally extricated himself from his unwanted pack. Unfortunately, an attack by wild dogs and another quake force him to return to help his frightened friends. Lucky finds himself caught between his responsibility toward his old pack and his admiration for the wild pack led by Alpha, their part-wolf leader. Even though his skills are those of a city dog, Lucky is able to quickly become invaluable to the new pack. However, if Alpha discovers his split loyalty, Lucky will suffer swift canine justice, which often ends in death. Disease, famine and other wild animals make survival even more tenuous as the fast-paced story progresses. Well-rounded characters, deep folklore and difficult problems without obvious answers drive the story. These dogs are not just loyal human companions, but warriors, leaders and friends. A cliffhanger ending ensures another volume is on the way. Perfectly crafted. (Adventure. 8-12)
