Maria Edgeworth (1767–1849) was a British novelist and children’s writer, and one of the first practitioners of realism in children’s literature. Born in England, she later resided on her father’s estate in Ireland, drawing on her experiences there for her novels. Her novel Castle Rackrent, an immediate success, is mentioned in The Great Gatsby.
