Solon Justus Buck (1884-1962), was the second Archivist of the United States. He led the Minnesota Historical Society, taught at the University of Minnesota, and championed the preservation of the state’s historical records. An expert on bibliography, he was also chief of the Library of Congress’s Manuscript Division. His works include Illinois in 1818 and The Planting of Civilization in Western Pennsylvania.
