Baby’s first winter is a magical time of new experiences and wonders. What is out there in the yard? What is hiding in the snow? And what is coming down the road? Using the time-honored question and answer technique, this book will capture the attention of even the littlest child. To find the answers to all the questions, the reader only needs to pull down a flap, and a word and a picture will be revealed. The flaps lift from top to bottom, bottom to top, and sideways, which will keep young ones guessing. The book and pages are sturdy enough for little hands, but the flaps could be torn with a hard pull. After several readings, most children will be able to point out and identify objects such as deer, snowmen, and snowplows. As reinforcement, all of the winter objects are featured on the last page of the book. The illustrations are pretty, and the bright colors use the entire palette. “Baby” does not have a name, or a specific gender, so this book can be adapted for girls and boys. As part of the “Baby Loves” series covering spring, summer, and fall, this book will please children and parents alike. Reviewer: Leona Illig AGERANGE: Ages 1 to 3.

An adorable brown-haired, brown-eyed Caucasian baby enjoys a day full of winter surprises. In this engaging lift-the-flap offering, simple questions are posed and the answers revealed underneath large, easy-to-grasp flaps. Printed on a large, polka-dot curtain is the question "What's outside the window?" Lifting the "curtain" reveals giant snowflakes. On subsequent pages, readers must peek behind a pile of snowballs to find Baby's red sled, behind a mound of dirt to discover a groundhog, behind a fence to find a giant purple snowplow and behind a snowman to find a baby deer. Finally, from behind a pine tree, Baby's mom appears with a frothy mug of hot cocoa. In most cases, a small piece of the hidden object can be seen peeking out from behind the closed flap; these hints will help to keep little ones interested by encouraging them to guess what Baby will find next. Katz's illustrations are--as usual--bright, bold, cheery and full of interesting patterns. They combine with the simple text and interactive flaps to produce an effective and appealing introduction to winter for the littlest readers. With lift-the-flap explorations of spring, summer and fall already on the shelves, this winter offering is a charming culmination to a satisfying series. (Board book. 6 mos.-2)
