"Betsy and her friends ring true in every particular."--The New York Times Book Review
    Children's Literature
Betsy is unhappy as she discovers her favorite teacher is soon to be married and will no longer be teaching at her school. She and her other third grade friends, Ellen and Billy, decide to pool their resources and buy their beloved Miss Grey a gift. But they don't have much money! Luckily, the new neighbor next door offers to pay Betsy to make sure the workmen close and lock the door to his new home during the week while he is away. Coincidentally enough, the new neighbor is marrying Miss Grey! Ten chapters are contained within this refreshing blast from yesteryear, detailing the adventures of Betsy and her friends. It is nicely written and uses simple sentence structure. Straightforward illustrations are found throughout. A preview of the next book in the series is located at the end. The author, who lived from 1898-1990, originally wanted to be a children's book illustrator, but, at the urging of an editor, started writing stories about the day to day activities of children, B is for Betsy was the first of these books and the first in this series. Ms. Haywood ultimately wrote more than fifty books for children. This is the third in a series of "Betsy Books." Highly recommended. 2004 (orig. 1943), Harcourt, Ages 6 to 10.
