Christopher Knight's first book, The Hiram Key (1996), co-authored with Robert Lomas, became an instant bestseller and has since been translated into 37 languages selling over a million copies worldwide. Alan Butler, an engineer fascinated by history, also became an expert in astrology and astronomy. He has researched ancient cultures, pagan beliefs and comparative religion and has published four successful books on the Knights Templar and the Grail legend. They both have a reputation for carefully researched and challenging theories on early history and are co-authors of Civilization One, Who Built the Moon? and Solomon's Power Brokers.

The suggestion that the Giza pyramids were laid out to represent the stars of Orion’s belt, with the position of the River Nile reflecting the Milky Way, was first put forward by the renowned author Robert Bauval in his bestselling book The Orion Mystery. In Before the Pyramids, Knight and Butler reveal that the British henges were arranged in the same formation—but much earlier. They also present irrefutable evidence that the astronomical calculations determining the layout of the pyramids could only have been made from the site of the henges in North Yorkshire. From this they can conclude that the pyramids of the pharaohs were conceived and planned in Britain! Their next stunning discovery takes us to modern times. They have found evidence that the whole Megalithic measuring system has survived into the 20th century. There are examples in Washington, DC—even in the positioning and construction of the Pentagon, which was only commenced in 1942 and is an exact copy of the dimensions of Stonehenge, dating to 3,000 BC.

In their admittedly sensational new effort, Knight and Butler (Civilization One) take on the common historical belief that the Sumerians and Egyptians were the first to record, and thus pass on, knowledge of the stars, writing, and math. While researching astronomy-based measurement systems, the authors detected what looked like a communication network begun in the Neolithic age that endured through the founding of the Knights Templar and Freemasons to the present day, allowing ancients to transmit their knowledge and methodology through the ages. Among other eye-opening claims, the authors outline a connection between Thomas Jefferson, the location of the Pentagon, 3rd millennium BCE pyramid builders of Egypt, and Stone Age "astronomer-priests" who used the planets and stars to measure time and kept a 366 day calendar influenced by a pendulum's arc. Drawing on principals of engineering, astronomy, and math, the authors illustrate that the pyramids of Giza, the King's Circus in England, the U.S. Capitol, and the Thornborough henges in North Yorkshire (created 5,500 years ago) were all built according to the same layout, to mirror the belt of Orion. 'A major breakthrough at last! Knight and Butler's stunning discovery could completely change the way we view our remote past... and origins.' Robert G. Bauval, author of The Orion Mystery 'Absolutely fascinating, and very, very convincing. Knight and Butler's findings provide compelling scientific evidence of the existence of an advanced, technological civilisation in remote antiquity.' —Graham Hancock, author of Fingerprints of the Gods

    Library Journal
These prolific British authors (coauthors, Civilization One: The World Is Not as You Thought It Was) are not Egyptologists or archaeologists, whose orthodoxy and canonical thinking they are at odds with. For the last ten years they have worked on reconstructing the system of astronomically based measurements that were used in Stone Age Britain. "This research suddenly exploded when we found a direct connection between the astronomer-priests of Stone Age Britain and the pyramid builders of ancient Egypt from the third millennium BC," they write. Their new book, while well written, shifts from henges in England, to the pyramids, to the U.S. Pentagon, where the authors believe there is a hidden chamber known to only 33 people. They also argue that the layout of major sites in Washington, DC, can be measured in Megalithic Degrees, with the creation of the city linked to Freemasonry. VERDICT This is a mind-boggling trip filled with information—and imagination. The lack of a bibliography is a serious omission, but maverick readers of the authors may love the adventure and make it a best seller.—Joan W. Gartland, Macomb Community Coll. Libs., Warren, MI
