An ancient berserker, a gigantic space going killer machine programmed to destroy all life, seizes a space laboratory devoted to preserving a vast number of human zygotes. The zygotes are being stored for retrieval and growth in a future colonization project. Captain Dirac Sardou, whose wife and zygote were on the space vehicle, is obsessed with pursuit of the berserker. During the chase, mysteriously the laboratory, Captain Sardou’s ship, and the berserker disappear.
Three hundred years after the disappearance, evidence of the missing vehicles and the damaged berserker is found.
The would be rescuers are confounded. Why didn’t the berserker destroy the Captain’s ship? Why hasn’t the berserker destroyed the vessel filled with nascent life?
    A fast paced space adventure.

A major Berserker novel - one of Saberhagen's finest - with one hell of a surprise up its sleeve.
Fred Saberhagen is the author of the bestselling Books of Swords and Lost Swords, as well as the chilling adventures (including A Question of Time) of the gentleman known as Dracula. He is one of the most popular writers in America today.

A captivating read for Berserker fans, with plenty of cool stuff revealed, especially at the end.
This story would make an excellent adaption to TV or film, but would probably work best as a story arc in part of an ongoing series, since the tale is best appreciated in the overall context of the Berserker saga (as is Saberhagen's short story "The Sign of the Wolf").
    Definitely worth the effort.

When an orbiting laboratory containing human germ plasm--the seeds of a future space colony--is seized by a berserker ship, a rescue fleet sets out in pursuit, knowing that it faces humanity's most formidable enemy. The latest in the author's popular berserker series features a cast of nonstereotypical characters as well as an unexpected conclusion. ... this fast-moving sf adventure works well on its own. A good additon to most sf collections.
