A scion of Manhattan's Upper East Side, Hilary Fields began writing her first novel at age sixteen. She continued to write even as she studied classics and philosophy at St. John's College, a tiny liberal arts college with the good fortune to be located upon a mountainside in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Though she returned to New York City for several years, penning three historical romances under another name and working as a copywriter and web editor, her heart remained in the Land of Enchantment. Finally, life took a ride on art's coattails, and she followed the heroine of her novel out to the sunny southwest. She currently resides in Santa Fe with her husband and three slightly sulky kitties. When not writing, she's usually elbow deep in bread dough, balls of yarn, or huffing and puffing up one of the local hiking trails.

A year ago, pastry chef Serafina Wilde's seemingly perfect life fell to pieces. So now, when her eccentric Aunt Pauline calls from Santa Fe needing her help, Sera jumps at the chance to start over. Pauline even offers to let her take over the family business, "Pauline's House of Passion," and turn it into a bakery... provided she agrees not to ditch the "back room." Cupcakes and sex toys don't exactly mix but Sera is willing to try, and what she finds in the beautiful City Different is the best life has to offer --- if she has the courage to go for it.

Serafina Wilde's world fell apart a year ago. She lost her boyfriend and her job on the same day in a disastrous scene that may have cost her any chance of a baking career in New York. When her Aunt Pauline calls in tears, Sera is almost relieved to drop everything to travel to Santa Fe, NM, to take over the family business. Sera soon falls for the quirky Southwestern city. A new home and the chance to convert Pauline's House of Passion into a bakery may be just what Sera needs to solve her problems—the business ones anyway. What she still has to work on is her self-confidence and allowing herself to believe that a real relationship may still be possible. VERDICT This novel by a writer who previously penned historical romances under another name contains charming characters with enough quirks to make them interesting and fun. Fans of Harriet Evans's novels should take note.—Jane Jorgenson, Madison P.L., WI
