Best friends Rachel Walker and Kristy Tate are excited as both their schools and two others have come together to compete in two events, a spelling bee and a science contest, that will conclude with a much anticipated dance party. Before the spelling bee commences, the girls spy a small shiny light that leads them to the happy discovery that a new fairy adventure awaits them. However, when they meet Carly the School Fairy, they quickly learn that all is not right in Fairyland. Jack Frost and his cohort of goblins have stolen Carly’s magic satchel, safety goggles, and glitter ball and are lurking about in Rachel’s school. All three objects help Carly look after three important areas of school in both fairyland and the human world. Now that they are in the hands of Jack and his goblins, school time will be full of confusion and both competitions, as well as the dance, are in danger of being ruined. With Carly’s help, Rachel and Kristy seek retrieve the three objects in time to save the competitions and dance from Jack’s mischievous plans? This chapter book, a part of the “Rainbow Magic: Special Edition” series is divided into three stories, each centered on retrieving one of the missing school items. Each plot progresses quickly, making the book a quick read. The pencil-like sketches are silly, supporting the lighthearted fun plot. At the beginning of the book, readers are given a special assignment that provides an enjoyable purpose for reading the book, as well as creating a short post-reading activity. Overall, this book will appeal to young girls who are fans of the series or enjoy a little fairy magic. Reviewer: Justina McBride; Ages 7 to 9.
