    CassaStar was just the beginning…

The Vindicarn War is a distant memory and Byron’s days of piloting Cosbolt fighters are over. He has kept the promise he made to his fallen mentor and friend - to probe space on an exploration vessel. Shuttle work is dull, but it’s a free and solitary existence. The senior officer is content with his life aboard the Rennather.

The detection of alien ruins sends the exploration ship to the distant planet of Tgren. If their scientists can decipher the language, they can unlock the secrets of this device. Is it a key to the Tgren’s civilization or a weapon of unimaginable power? Tensions mount as their new allies are suspicious of the Cassan’s technology and strange mental abilities.

To complicate matters, the Tgrens are showing signs of mental powers themselves; the strongest of which belongs to a pilot named Athee, a woman whose skills rival Byron’s unique abilities. Forced to train her mind and further develop her flying aptitude, he finds his patience strained. Add a reluctant friendship with a young scientist, and he feels invaded on every level. All Byron wanted was his privacy…

Cavanaugh follows CassaStar with another work that shares the pros and cons of old-school science fiction. With his glory days in the Vindicarn Warbut a distant memory, grizzled telepathic pilot Byron serves aboard the flagship Rennather. The ship is sent to the planet Tgren to help investigate a strange alien artifact that’s turning the Tgrens into mind readers. Byron is saddled with Mevine, an eager young space cadet, and charged with training the too friendly Tgren woman Athee to use her new powers, leading to a series of predictable complications. The main plot will be familiar to longtime fans of SF books and movies, and the chaste romance between Byron and Athee is straight out of golden age SF “juveniles.” Those looking for an unchallenging throwback will enjoy Byron’s adventure, but fans of more recent genre efforts will scorn its well-worn tropes. Years after the end of the Vindicarn War, which cost him his best friend and navigator, Officer Byron has given up flying Cosbolt fighters in favor of work on the exploration vessel Rennather. When an alien artifact is discovered on the planet Tgren, Byron transports a group of experts, including Mevine, a young linguistic analyst and code breaker, to the site. There he meets Athee, the niece of the planet's prefect, who not only demonstrates her skills as a pilot but also displays a number of psychic talents similar to those of Cassans like Byron and not previously thought possible for Tgrens. When the alien artifact attracts unwanted, hostile attention from other planets, Byron, Athee, and Mevine discover that there are many ways to become heroes and that some of those paths lead to death. VERDICT This sequel to Cavanaugh's first novel, CassaStar, delivers on the promise of its predecessor, combining military action sequences and political intrigue with strong, memorable characters. Reminiscent of the action-driven stories of Robert A. Heinlein's early fiction, this title is suitable for YA as well as adult fans of military sf.
