William Ralph Inge (1860-1954) was born in Yorkshire, England. An Anglican priest, he served as a professor of divinity at Cambridge and Dean of St Paul's Cathedral. Author of more than thirty-five books and an outspoken critic of the Catholic Church, he advocated “autonomous faith” instead of reliance on authority. His writings include Faith and Knowledge (1904) and The Philosophy of Plotinus (1918).

First delivered as a series of eight lectures at Oxford University, this 1899 volume in defense of the Christian faith, “to confute all heretics and schismatics,” is based on nature and reason rather than signs and wonders. Mysticism is defined here as the realization—both mental and physical—of the presence of God. Included here are chapters, “The Mystical Element in the Bible,” “Practical and Devotional Mysticism,” “Nature-Mysticism and Symbolism,” and more.
