Steve Mosby has become one of a handful of writers who make me excited about crime fiction - Val McDermid

The small team of policemen never even identified the dead girl and, for the officers involved, her murder came to symbolise everything that was wrong with the city: a haphazard sprawl of commerce and indifference.

Four months on, that group is in disarray. Sean has disappeared into the city's black heart and not returned, and Martin is separated from his job, his wife and his friends. But then a simple note from his ex-partner forces him to re-enter an investigation he'd rather forget. 'I found her', it says.

The search leads him from one side of the city to the other, in a downward spiral of violence and pain, and drags him into the orbit of the things that are really wrong with the city: the eight brothers rumoured by legend to have control over everything.

    Publishers Weekly
Mosby (The 50/50 Killer) takes readers into the most sinister neighborhoods of a crowded British city in this dark thriller. Former police officer Martin is seeking the murderer of Alison Sheldon. A horrific video turns up with details of the brutal killing, but Martin's partner, Sean, has disappeared, hampering the investigation. Soon Martin finds himself hunting the associates of criminal Timothy Hartley, murdered by Martin and his fellow officers. The clues evolve in a slow and sinister manner as Martin discovers why Sean is missing and how Sheldon and other victims are connected to Hartley. Personal interactions set this tale apart from other thrillers, as Martin's fractured relationship with his estranged wife and his continued obsession with a female cop run throughout the novel and play a major part in the surprising conclusion. From the Publisher
For a first-time novelist he writes with remarkable assuredness. His prose is crisp and vivid ... And he is not afraid to take risks to create a well-wrought story ... At 26 he writes with the confidence of someone twice his age and, in a genre over-populated with stereotypes, he manages to bring a fresh eye and a soaring imagination—Irish Independent

Writing of this quality and originality doesn't come along very often - if you don't read Mosby this year, you'll be reading about him next year, so why not get a head start—Morning Star

His book is fiercely original, truly intriguing. This is speculative fiction at its reckless best—Literary Review
