Gillian Shields is the author of Immortal, Betrayal, and Eternal, the first books about the sisterhood of the Mystic Way, as well as many other books for young readers. She spent her childhood roaming over the Yorkshire moors and dreaming of the Brontë sisters. After studying in Cambridge, London, and Paris, she became a teacher. She has taught in a girls' boarding school and also in a drama school where it was rumored that the ghost of a young girl could be heard crying in the night. Gillian was inspired to write this series in celebration of the power of first love, the strength of female friendship, and the haunting mystery of the past.

In Destiny, the fourth and final book in Gillian Shields’s romantic, gothic Immortal series, Helen, Evie, and Sarah, the Sisters of the Mystic Way, must use their powers to battle for their souls.

Malevolent forces haunt Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, the girls’ elite boarding school on the English moors. Dr. Franzen, an evil man from Helen’s past, has taken over as headmaster. And while Helen longs to believe her mother, the priestess of a coven of dark witches, has reformed, she fears her mother cannot be trusted.

At least Helen can cling to the prediction that a love "beyond the confines of this world" is waiting for her. Could this be Lynton, the mysterious music student who visits Wyldcliffe for his lessons?

Destiny is the final book in the Immortal series and begins where the previous volume left off. Helen, Evelyn and Sarah are students at Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, a prestigious boarding school on the English moors with a reputation for being stuck in the Victorian era. The truth, however, is much darker. There is a hidden coven of dark witches at Wyldcliffe, led by the former headmistress and Helen's mother, Celia Hartle. As this book opens, Celia is imprisoned in a rock, put there by Helen and her friends all of whom possess mystic powers. Helen wants to believe her mother has repented and is capable of love, but she does not know if she can trust the priestess. Helen, Evelyn, and Sarah are drawn into an epic battle of good and evil for their own souls and the souls of those they love. There is constant mention throughout the book of events from the earlier volumes, which can be confusing for readers new to the series. Shields's writing is pedestrian and laden with trite analogies that add no emotional impact. While each chapter is told from the perspective of a different girl, there is no real individuality to their voices or complexity to the characters. Events are telegraphed far in advance, though there are some tense set pieces. Fans of the series will be happy to have resolution, but this volume will not interest readers who are not familiar with the earlier books. Reviewer: Jennifer Rosenstein
