Gr 9 Up—This paranormal sequel to Starcrossed (HarperCollins, 2011) continues demigod Helen's quest to descend into the Underworld to try to defeat the Furies and end thousands of years of endless killing among her kin. In this world, Helen and her demigod cousins are descended from one of Four Houses, and the Furies make them all enemies of one another. Despite the fact that Helen and Lucas were from enemy Houses and wanted to kill each other in Starcrossed, they fell in love and then discovered that they were first cousins. Now, they're finding it hard to resist their mutual attration, despite knowing its wrong. Then Orion shows up to rival Lucas for Helen's affections. Helen can fly and throw lightning bolts but makes mistakes and, like all the Gods, is guilty of hubris. She finds herself in horrific situations and the only way she can end each night so she can wake up to try again is to die - by quicksand, falling, etc.-and this is taking a terrible physical toll on her. The violence that the Gods and demigods inflict upon one another is compelling, but also brutal. Enough of the events from Starcrossed are recounted that it's not essential to have read it first. Unfinished events in this book guarantee another installment in this series that's loosely based on the Helen of Troy myth. In this sequel to Starcrossed (HarperTeen, 2011/VOYA June 2011), Scion Helen continues the odyssey begun in her earlier dreams of the Furies. Now, however, her dreamless nights are filled with journeys to the Underworld. She hopes to find a way to disarm the Furies and end the three-thousand-year legacy of bloodletting among the four classical Houses. She and Lucas/Paris are still attracted to each other, in spite of now knowing they are first cousins. A mysterious new attraction has entered the picture—Orion, a Rogue Scion like Helen. There are extra helpings of romance as Helen's mortal friend, Claire, pairs up with Scion Jason and Matt becomes enamored with Jason's twin, Ariadne. The romance alternates with fast-paced action from above and below, as those who benefit from the Furies's role are determined to thwart Helen's quest. The mythological framework and minor characters are more fully-realized in this sequel. Helen's trips to the Underworld are conveyed with gut-wrenching detail. Mortal friends Claire, Matt, and Zach do more than giggle, grin, and worry, though there is still enough of that to annoy sophisticated readers. There is a healthy dose of classical deus ex machina and tantalizing hints of a third book in which all-out war erupts between gods and Scions. Since copies of Starcrossed are currently missing from both my school and public libraries, it seems likely that Dreamless and its sequel will be well-liked by fans of contemporary renderings of classical mythology. Real sexual tension apparently requires all the divine forces in the universe be arrayed against you, if this book is any guide. Demigods and erstwhile lovers Helen and Lucas can never be together, because they're secretly first cousins. Just in case the couple realizes that relationships between cousins aren't considered incest in their home state of Massachusetts (or 24 other states in the union), Lucas's father explains that the future of the demigod species, nay, of the entire planet depends on the couple staying apart. Because! Of history! And magical things! And could Lucas just stop being so selfish? Lucas responds by pretending to hate Helen, following the standard tortured-angsty-boy recipe for staying away from his girlfriend. Poor Helen, meanwhile, is spending all her sleeping hours traveling the Underworld. She hopes to defeat the Furies and end the senseless feuding that has tormented the semi-divine Scions since the Trojan War, but she can't seem to make any headway in the blasted hellscape of the Underworld. Not to mention, her magical journeys are keeping her from REM sleep, thus probably killing her. At least she's met a hot new Scion in the Underworld to fill the vacancy Lucas left by being such a meanie. Interesting plot twists almost carry endless pages of Forbidden Love.
