That Girl fulfills the promise of the groundbreaking first season, but don't take our word for it. Marlo Thomas's Ann Marie, the quintessential small-town girl seeking a career as an actress in New York, is definitely getting noticed. The sparkling and literate episodes in That Girl's sophomore season not only broaden Ann's career prospects (and that fabulous wardrobe one can't help but wonder how she can afford) but also further test her relationship with writer boyfriend Donald (Ted Bessel), with whom she has an "understanding" and -- thanks, network censors -- a "wholesome" relationship. They are separated when she accompanies a Broadway-bound play on its out-of-town tryout ("Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder") but reunited when Donald arrives to review said play ("The Philadelphia Story"). Ann is romanced by a jet-setting English photographer (the two-part "It's a Mod, Mod World") and, in a scenario that anticipates The Goodbye Girl, shares an absent Donald's apartment with an obnoxious, albeit charming and charismatic friend (guest star Bill Bixby) in "The Apartment." A bonus featurette makes a convincing case for That Girl as "a new beginning for women." Ann Marie is a TV icon, an empowering role model for a new generation of women not inspired by June Cleaver. But more than that, she's just delightful company.
