Zara and Nick are soul mates, meant to be together forever. But that's
not quite how things have worked out. For starters, well, Nick is dead.
Supposedly, he's been taken to a mythic place for warriors known as
Valhalla, so Zara and her friends might be able to get him back. But
it's taking time, and meanwhile a group of evil pixies is devastating
Bedford, with more teens going missing every day. An all-out war seems
imminent, and the good guys need all the warriors they can find. But how
to get to Valhalla? And even if Zara and her friends discover the way,
there's that other small problem: Zara's been pixie kissed. When she
finds Nick, will he even want to go with her? Especially since she
    hasn't turned into just any pixie. . . She's Astley's queen.

Gr 7 Up—In Carrie Jones's sequel (2010) to Need (2008) and Captivate (2010, all Bloomsbury), Zara has been kissed by Astley and turned into a pixie, which is the last thing her friends and family wanted for her. But as she sees it, it is the only way that she can go to Valhalla and rescue Nick, her one true love. One of the main problems with this plan is that she is now Astley's queen and has a deep connection to him and his people. As the story progresses, it also becomes clear that someone is trying very hard not only to stop them from rescuing Nick, but also trying to kill Zara and Astley. Although well-narrated by Julia Whelan, this book leaves listeners with more questions and loose ends. A must-buy if your library already circulates the first two titles, but not a stand-alone by any means.—Genevieve Gallagher, Charlottesville High School, VA

Entice is a mythical adventure of pixies, humans, and weres. Following in the fashion of its predecessors, it has a dark, mysterious, romantic feel that makes readers feel enticed by the characters. This reader was right next to Zara as she discovered herself and searched for Nick. After finishing the book, readers will desire more; Jones outdid herself this time. While Need (Bloomsbury, 2008/VOYA December 2008) and Captivate (Bloomsbury,2010/VOYA April 2010) are good, Entice is fantastic. 4Q, 4P. Reviewer: Linda Infantino, Teen Reviewer
    VOYA - Susan Hampe
Things are getting worse across the board. Bedford is under siege by a group of evil pixies led by a wicked king who killed Nick, sending him to the mythic land of Valhalla. Wanting to do all she can to help bring him back, Zara is pixie kissed by Astley and becomes his queen, causing a rift between her and her friends. No one expects it to be easy for them to reach Valhalla and get Nick back, but the journey will be far more perilous than they imagine. Each bit of information comes at an increasingly terrible price, causing Zara to question her motives and wondering how much she is truly willing to risk bringing Nick back. The third book in the Need series, Entice takes your hand and pulls you along on the dizzying journey to reach Valhalla. Zara's struggles grow even more complex with the complication of her being a pixie, as she finds herself constantly questioned by her friends. Like an experienced runner, the book takes off at a solid pace that will carry readers quickly and fluidly through the pages. Fans of the series will not be disappointed by the latest installment in this great series. Reviewer: Susan Hampe

Book three in the "Need" series picks up with Zara, who was formerly half-human and half-pixie, but now turned fully pixie, and a queen at that, trying to figure out how to get to Valhalla to retrieve Nick, her werewolf boyfriend. Zara enlists the help of her close friends (some of whom are shape-shifting weres and an elf) and pixie king Astley. As if figuring out how to reach Valhalla wasn't enough trouble, they also have to help protect the town, which is besieged with violent and blood-thirsty evil pixies. Teenagers are dying and going missing, but no one beyond Zara and her friends know the real reason why. Zara and Astley do their best to figure out how to save Nick, but find traps and complications at nearly every turn. A book about pixie history and magic gives them the lead they need, but it takes a few false starts before Zara is able to get to Valhalla. Here, she must defeat Frank, Astley's uncle and the pixie responsible not just for Nick's death but for the larger pixie war that is unfolding. Her reunion with Nick is fraught with worry—if he will accept her as a pixie and if she can shake the feeling that she is betraying Astley. Though Nick arrives safely home, the impending pixie war looms large, leaving Zara and friends without much time to revel in their victory. Though their quest is fairly straightforward—get to Valhalla—the interruptions and blockades keep the story interesting. Readers may find this book nearly impossible to understand without having read the first two in the series. Twilight fans will feel right at home here, in rural Maine, which feels a lot like Forks, with Zara and her love triangle. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor
    Kirkus Reviews

Jones picks up directly after the end of Captivate (2010), when Zara allowed Astley to kiss her and turn her into a pixie. Being a pixie, never mind Astley's pixie queen, terrifies Zara—but she did it so she can potentially travel to Valhalla and retrieve her maybe-dead boyfriend Nick. The thrust of this third installment is that quest: Find Valhalla, recover Nick. Pixie king Astley helps Zara and loves her; she begins to reciprocate even while pining for Nick at every moment. Unlike most love triangles in the genre, this one's outcome feels refreshingly unpredictable. The small Maine town establishes a curfew and the FBI arrives, but evil pixies still murder teen after teen. Epic war approaches, on earth and in the gods' realm. It's hard to say whether Zara's burning need to find Nick either trumps her earnest desire to protect innocent people from deadly pixies or blends with it—Nick's a critical leader/warrior, after all. Fans of the first two will continue to swoon, enjoying prose that's idiosyncratically casual (Valhalla feels "ungettable") and indulgently, oh-so-teen-like angsty ("Your sigh smells like sorrow"). (Paranormal romance. YA)
