Lawrence J. Quirk was one of the nation’s leading film authorities who wrote over twenty books on film and the media and many articles about Bette Davis over a forty-three-year period. Quirk was the editor and publisher of the film journal Quirk’s Reviews, the director of the James R. Quirk Memorial Film Symposium, and the donor of the prestigious James R. Quirk Awards to deserving film figures. He died in October 2014.

Much has been written about actress Davis, but little has been very revealing, or comprehensive--until now. Davis's autobiography ( The Lonely Life , LJ 9/1/62) was a typically glossy Hollywood caricature, and the update This 'n That (LJ 3/1/87) was more of a reply to her daughter than autobiography. In Whitney Stine's Mother Goddam (1974; Berkley, 1984. pap.) Davis herself answered and often contradicted the text, but this was the public, cigarette-waving Davis. Appearing soon after Davis's death, Quirk's monumental book is actually the culmination of years of research by the celebrity biographer. Though Davis's six-decade film career is discussed, as is her personal life, what is most evident here is the passion of this woman, so often hidden behind an outspoken, and in later life, crusty exterior.
