Library Journal
Past publisher of the Miami Herald and former U.S. ambassador to Spain, Capen has written a solid work on the importance of values that combines quality writing and strong organization. Chapters address the most significant factors in developing a values-based life while highlighting such values as character, self-esteem, excellence, and trustworthiness. The "On the Record" sidebars highlighting various political, business, and spiritual leaders' opinions and views are an especially effective tool. Capen sent out surveys to over 200 people in an effort to gain insight into the nation's view on the values and morals necessary to succeed in today's world. The quotes are well placed throughout the text and offer helpful bits of information. Though he may overemphasize the spiritual influence on his life for some people's tastes, Capen's excellent writing gives the reader food for thought while avoiding jargon.
