The spirits dance like fire in the sky. . . .

The three cubs—Kallik, Toklo, and Lusa—along with their shape-shifting companion, Ujurak, stand on the edge of the sea-ice under the blazing Northern Lights. The land has come to an end, but the bears' journey is far from over. Now they must put their trust in Kallik's paws, as she feels the ice pulling her out toward the ocean.

Life on the ice is more difficult than the bears imagined. While Kallik struggles to remember her polar bear roots, Toklo bristles in the unfamiliar territory and Lusa gets weaker by the day; black and brown bears don't belong on the ice. Meanwhile, Ujurak learns firsthand what lurks beneath the whorls and bubbles of the ice, and what he discovers will change everything.

Just when it seems like they'll never survive in the frozen wilderness, a mystical encounter with a bear spirit assures them that all will be well. But this strange vision leads to even more questions, and ultimately it might tear the bears apart—this time for good—as the next steps of their journey come into focus.

Young bears Lusa, Toklo, Kallik, and shape-shifting Ujurak began their journey to save the wild in book one of the "Seekers" series. Now in this fifth chapter, the cubs have overcome environmental obstacles and escaped the ?flat-faces' (humans) to reach the Arctic Circle, where Ujurak's visions have led them. Polar bear Kallik is thrilled to be back on clean ice among delicious seals, but black bear Lusa and grizzly Toklo feel dangerously out of their element. When food and Ujurak's guiding signs both become scarce, tensions again erupt among the species. Not even a revelation about Ujurak's origins can erase the bears' fears of hibernation, starvation, and the toxic oil that emanates from the flat-face camps and machines. Have they read the signs correctly? Or is all hope for the wilderness—and their fellowship—lost? Hunter's fifth book in the "Seekers" series is similar in content and tone to the first four: the scenery has changed from mountains to glaciers, but the same themes of environmental degradation and friendship prevail. Especially notable is the story's emphasis on a manmade oil spill and its effect on the bears, birds, beluga whales and other wildlife. Teachers looking to discuss the recent Gulf of Mexico disaster may wish to apply this as an example of the dangers associated with that incident. Reviewer: Cara Chancellor
