The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars in Gretchen McNeil's witty and suspenseful sequel to Get Even. The members of Don't Get Mad aren't just mad anymore . . . they're afraid. And with Margot in a coma and Bree under house arrest, it's up to Olivia and Kitty to try to catch their deadly tormentor. But just as the girls are about to go on the offensive, Ed the Head reveals a shocking secret that turns all their theories upside down. The killer could be anyone, and this time he—or she—is out for more than just revenge.

The girls desperately try to discover the killer's identity as their personal lives are falling apart: Donté is pulling away from Kitty and seems to be hiding a secret of his own, and Olivia's mother is on an emotional downward spiral. The killer is closing in, the threats are becoming more personal, and when the police refuse to listen, the girls have no choice but to confront their anonymous friend . . . or die trying.

VOYA, August 2015 (Vol. 38, No. 3) - Hilary Crew
In this sequel to Get Even (HarperCollins, 2014/Voya October 2014), the members of DGM—Don’t Get Mad—are foiled in their attempts to catch a ruthless killer when Ed Headley discovers that their chief suspect, Christopher Beeman, had earlier committed suicide. With Margot in a coma and Bree under house arrest, Kitty and Olivier swear Ed into DGM followed by the swearing in of Bree’s boyfriend, John, and Margot’s friend, Logan. Threats to “destroy everything” in the lives of DGM memberscontinue to arrive, another murder is committed, former DGM “targets” are kidnapped, and friends who form a copy-cat DGM are arrested. In a tension-filled dénouement, the members of DGM are brought together in the school basement to face the killer—one of their own. The convoluted plot, based on secrets about Beeman’s gay past, is complicated by sub-plots such as episodes featuring Olivia’s mother and Olivia’s meeting with the father she never knew, plus additional “missions” hatched by the copy-cat DGM. The frenetic pacing is leavened by the muscled figure of “Norse god” Olaf, hired to supervise Bree, snide dialogue, and cultural allusions: Rapunzel, “Star Wars,” and “Spartacus.” Bishop Du Maine’s “Maine Men” might remind teens of Robert Cormier’s The Chocolate War. The story of DGM target, Tammi, adds a thoughtful note as DGM members think about the justification and consequences of their actions.Because the plot is not particularly well integrated with events in Get Even, readers who enjoyed first novel will be better placed to enjoy this sequel. Reviewer: Hilary Crew; Ages 12 to 18.

A secret society faces a threat greater than discovery: death. At the beginning of this sequel to Get Even (2014), the members of Don't Get Mad are separated: Bree is under house arrest, Margot is in a coma, and Kitty and Olivia are trying to discover the killer who's preying on DGM victims and threatening DGM itself. Down two members, Kitty and Olivia bring on board Ed "the Head," a wheeler-dealer at Bishop DuMaine, and Bree's best friend and boyfriend, John. That's how they find out that their prime suspect has been dead for a year, yet someone is still working to bring down DGM. Unnecessarily complicating the action, a new DGM forms and pulls off two pranks in one day. But with DGM victims going missing—or getting killed—the original DGM members know they have to discover not just the identities of their replacements, but the killer as well. Suspicion abounds, and the girls will have to ask whom they can trust as the plot drags to its end—but not a conclusion, as the pieces are put in place for a third novel readers may not feel is necessary. While Get Even successfully kept the tension high nearly to the end, this sequel widens the canvas and mutes the cat-and-mouse game with too many mice and too many storylines. For committed fans of the first book only. (Suspense. 12-16)
