Handa feeds her grandmother's black hen, Mondi, every morning. One morning, Mondi goes missing; now, Handa and her friend Akeyo must find the hen. In their search for Mondi, Handa and Akeyo discover many other creatures but they do not find Mondi. As the girls search, readers get a chance to discover Kenyan wildlife and practice counting skills. Handa and Akeyo are disappointed as they head back to grandmother's house without their pet until Handa hears cheeping under a bush. The two girls find Mondi plus ten little chicks. The opening and ending pages display all the animals if one wants to count and look at the creatures. This brightly illustrated book gives early elementary students a nice lesson with numbers as well as a brief introduction to wildlife in an exotic country. Throughout the story, nice details and colors allow observation of unusual animals from Africa. Browne adds a nice bit of suspense when Mondi disappears and does not immediately reveal where she is hiding. Kindergarten and first grade readers can learn about animals in a distant land, enjoy counting and hope to discover Mondi. Reviewer: Elizabeth FronkSchool Library Journal
K-Gr 2—A young Kenyan girl cannot find her grandmother's hen. As Handa and her friend Akeyo go in search of it, they discover two butterflies, three stripy mice, four lizards, etc., until eventually they find Mondi with her 10 newly hatched chicks. This British import covers no new territory as a counting book, although it is certainly serviceable as such. However, the painterly illustrations are luminous, featuring warm, sunny colors that seem to glow. The wonder on the girls' faces as they discover the wildlife around them will intrigue readers.
