One snowy day, Henry and Henry's big dog Mudge see a sign.
It says SNOWMAN CONTEST.
"Wow!" says Henry, and Mudge wags his tail. Then they run home to tell Henry's father.
Can Henry, his father, and his big dog Mudge come up with the best snowman plan and win the contest?
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Henry saw a sign in a store window announcing a snowman contest in the park. He raced home with Mudge to tell his Dad and to see if they could enter the contest. His Dad was busy painting a chair and from the looks of things, he had more paint on himself than on the chair. When Saturday came, they were off to the park, and Mudge had a particularly good time visiting with the other dogs. Henry and his Dad had a plan and their snowman was one that brought laughs and a prize. Another charming vignette in the lives of Henry and Mudge.

PreS-Gr 3-This charming adventure is the 19th installment of the classic beginning-to-read series by Cynthia Rylant (S&S, 1999). Henry and his Dad, and his big dog Mudge, enter a snowman contest in the park. The topic, pace, and humorous conclusion of this high-interest tale will satisfy readers and listeners alike. The female narrator speaks slowly and clearly, making it easy for beginning readers to follow along. The narration is supported by wintry-sounding music and appropriately subtle sound effects. Using the book and tape together promotes independent reading and is an entertaining way to improve reading skills. The ten-minute length is good for limited attention spans and provides a sense of accomplishment when completed. Youngsters will want to listen to the tape and read along again and again, each time becoming a bit more confident. This is an excellent production for pre-readers and beginning readers.-Maura Smith, Somerset Elementary School, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
