Jeffrey Blaine is a good man, a wealthy and powerful Wall Street broker with impeccable social standing. But his wife—who supports charitable foundations from their Park Avenue townhouse—seems to have lost interest in their marriage, and his daughter, a beautiful debutante ready for Yale University in the fall, has turned sullen and rebellious. Having achieved everything he'd ever dreamed of, Blaine now feels unsettled, stagnant, hungry for a new challenge—a challenge that presents itself suddenly in the person of Chet Fiore, an ambitious entrepreneur rumored to be tied to organized crime. When Blaine rebukes Fiore's offer to participate in an illegal business proposition, he discovers that the mafia lieutenant has laid an elaborate trap to ensure Blaine's cooperation: the abduction of his beloved daughter. To ensure her safe return, Blaine is forced now to become a partner in a money laundering scheme of immense proportions. But once the transaction is completed, Blaine is a changed man, unexpectedly empowered by Fiore's demands, a man ready to shed his staid past for the urgency and risk of a life of crime; and so they form an alliance that forever changes the lives of both men, leading to the demise of one and the corruption of the other.
House of Lords is a riveting investigation of power and corruption—part human drama, part thriller—that has the potential both to be a critically acclaimed portrait of our age.

Philip Rosenberg -- who has previously collaborated on thrillers such as Badge of the Assassin with Robert K. Tanenbaum -- shows himself to be highly skilled at creating disturbing twists and dynamic tension in House of Lords, his darkly cynical but insightful solo debut.
Although Wall Street broker Jeffrey Blaine is wealthy, forceful, and revered, he feels weary and unfulfilled, and his insatiable hunger for challenges drives him to seek new distractions. At a party for his daughter's 18th birthday, Manhattan's elite assemble to pay homage, and the stage is set for Blaine's greatest conflict. In the midst of the celebration, a young woman is raped, and Blaine allows the incident to go by without calling the police -- at great risk to his reputation.
The mysterious Chet Fiore arrives on the scene -- Blaine has no idea who he is or why he's there -- to clean up the mess. Blaine soon learns that Fiore is a rising crime figure, and while the knowledge alarms and dismays him, he also finds it invigorating. Eventually, Blaine is forced to repay Fiore's aid by becoming a partner in a massive money-laundering plot, and their relationship progresses into a lethal competition to see just which one has more brains, style, cool, and power.
A subtle, intense drama about a fierce war of wills, House of Lords pits the mob against New York high finance and brings a potent sense of honesty to gritty events that will leave you perched at the edge of your seat, gasping for air. (Tom Piccirilli)
