    Children's Literature
This very simple text by the acclaimed children's author Margaret Wise Brown has been developed into an early reading book. It is almost too simple and may not encourage many rereadings. The pictures by Karas are charming and kid-friendly. The afterword may be of interest to parents and teachers—it is a brief piece by Leonard S. Marcus who has written extensively about the author. Part of the "Road to Reading" series, this is a Mile 1 book for kids who know the alphabet and are just beginning to read. Each book in the series contains guidance for parents and a description of what each of the five levels is designed to do. 1999 (orig. 1954), Golden Books, and $3.99. Ages 4 to 6.
