David Herbert Lawrence was born in Nottinghamshire in 1885 and died in Vence, France, in 1930. He was the son of a coal-miner and a mother from a family with middle-class aspirations. He was a poet, short story writer, travel writer, playwright, art critic as well as being one of the most consummate novelists of the twentieth century.
