What People are Saying About This

    From the Publisher

"New characters, such as the hyperactive “Owen 1,” keep the story fresh, but readers will most enjoy Grace’s angst-ridden first-person narrative, delivered with her usual comic touch. Cartoon illustrations (and directions for creating a zine) enliven the text and help to showcase Grace’s artistic talent. A sixth adventure is planned."—Booklist

    Children's Literature - Patricia Williamson
Just Grace is just fabulous. The story is in the form of a diary that Grace is writing about her days, her thoughts, and her crazy ideas. Embedded within the story is information that will make a girl go adventurous and find all the materials around the house to make things within the cover and story. In this story Grace shows how to make a "zine" a mini-book that can be created without much cutting and absolutely no staples or gluing, unless it is to illustrate a page. Grace simply walks you through her life in a very simplistic way that is enjoyable and random. As each thing happens in her life, she thinks through what was good, what was bad, and what could have been worse. Then, the picture of her life continues in stream of consciousness. This story centers around her project for school called "Foods Of the World." Grace decides to do the flavors of potato chips. Grace walks in and out of friendships in a very normal way and despite herself makes things right when she needs to. If girls have been reading Amber Brown or Judy Moody books, they will like the style of "Just Grace" books, this book being one of a series. The author illustrates the books herself and the raw drawings lend themselves well to the story. No part of it is so long or drawn out that if you could not attend to the story for long a reader would be okay because it is easily re-engaged at a later sitting. Reviewer: Patricia Williamson
    School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—Grace's third-grade class is researching foods of the world, a topic suggested by the principal after he overhears Owen, the class troublemaker, ridiculing another student's lunch. That night, Grace's neighbor gives her a bag of delicious roast-chicken-flavored potato chips from France, so she decides to study unusual potato chips of the world. Harper once again gets the emotions just right. The child is jealous when her dad seems more interested in her best friend's project than in hers. She gains a greater respect for troublemaking Owen when she misbehaves, and instead of tattling on her, he takes the blame. As in the previous books, Grace's narration meanders somewhat, and the text is broken up into short sections with small, cartoon sketches, diagrams, and lists. As an added highlight, this title includes instructions on how to make a zine (after Grace receives one as a gift). This easy chapter book is sure to be popular with fans of the series, but it also stands alone.—Jackie Partch, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
