Keeker lives in Vermont with her parents and a vast array of pets, including a goat named Goatie and a horse named Plum. Plum would enjoy a nice, quiet summer. To her disgust, plans have been made to visit Keeker's New York relations. Their big kooky house is old, near Washington Irving's village of Sleepy Hollow, and reputedly haunted. Ghosts, headless horsemen, and bossy cousins all ensure an exciting time in the sixth book of the "Sneaky Pony" series. In crafting detailed descriptions of New England, families, and animals, Hadley Higginson noticeably draws on her own childhood in Vermont. Even Plum and Goatie have personalities, as revealed through their thoughts, and her portrayals of the human characters show Higginson's humorous understanding of normal family interactions. The reference to Washington Irving and his Legend of Sleepy Hollow would make this book an enjoyable addition to a unit about short stories. Reviewer: Amalia Selle
