    Children's Literature - Magi Evans
Guardian angel Aria needs to help just one more person to earn her wings. Only she can see the blue smoke whirling around Mikayla, which is the signal that she has found the person who needs her. Though she is only twelve, perfectionist Mikayla has a bright future as a dancer, if she is willing to “eat, sleep, and breathe dance,” as the motto of the dance school she plans to audition for proudly declares. But she is also discovering that if dance is her whole life, there is not much time for movies, bike rides, or just hanging out with friends. To make matters worse, Mikayla has put extra pressure on herself to win the scholarship to the dance school in order to help her parents, who are struggling because Mikayla’s father has lost his job. Aria knows that Mikayla will be happier without the pressure to be perfect, but she also knows that Mikayla needs to come to that conclusion on her own. It is Aria’s job to find ways to help Mikayla get there. The story’s narrative alternates between the two girls, giving readers a chance to appreciate the perspective of both. For a twelve-year-old, Aria seems very wise, but in helping others she is also continuing to learn about life, making her seem a little bit human as well as angelic. And the message that one does not have to be perfect to have a good life is one that many tween readers need to understand. Reviewer: Magi Evans; Ages 8 to 12.
