    Lights, Camera . . . Zombies!

  • Frank Hardy staggered across the lawn toward his brother, Joe, his arms outstretched. Frank was a zombie, and Joe was a human.

    Translation: Joe was Frank’s lunch.

Joe, who was a year younger than Frank, picked up a long blue noodle from a pile of pool toys and wielded it like a sword. “You’ll never get me!” he cried out.

Frank ignored Joe’s threats and continued staggering.

“Stay back, you evil monster!” Joe shook the noodle menacingly at Frank.

Ha-ha, poor Joe. The flimsy foam tube was no match for Zombie Frank’s supernatural strength and appetite.

Nearby, Cissy Zermeño staggered toward Tico Sanchez. She was a zombie too, and Tico was her lunch.

The boys track down an unusually undead suspect in this Hardy Boys Secret Files mystery.

Bayport is buzzing with excitement when a film crew sets up shop to film the latest zombie flick. Frank, Joe, and their friends are really psyched that there will be fake zombies running around town—not to mention a famous director and some of their favorite actors. They are hoping for a sighting or two, and maybe even an autograph, if they’re lucky!

But things get a little too real when one of the boys’ friends claims he saw an actual zombie in Bayport—nowhere near the shoot. Is someone just pulling a crazy prank? Or is the movie starting to take on a life of its own?

Zombies are coming to Bayport, hometown of the Hardy Boys, Frank and Joe. A famous director has chosen Bayport as the location for shooting his upcoming movie, "Zombie Mania." The people of the town start practicing their best zombie imitations, hoping to be cast for a movie role. But when a real zombie is captured on video, Frank and Joe put their acting careers on hold to solve the mystery. In their traditional investigative style, Frank and Joe take out their whiteboard and write down the questions that need to be answered (who, what, when, where, why and how). Step by step they reason through their hunches and discuss their hypotheses. Eventually, they solve the zombie mystery through hard work, keen observation, and persistence. Avid eight- or nine-year-old readers will likely plow through this book in a couple of days. Passionate mystery readers may be disappointed with the lack of suspense. The beginning of the book engages readers with zombie footprints, encourages them to wonder if zombies are real or fake, and suggests the fear that the zombie may eat them. The suspense quickly dies out and leads to simple investigative work. Younger children will be engaged by the comic book illustrations and mystery of the unknown zombie. The book contains some challenging vocabulary words that may require adult assistance, such as obnoxious, medallion, barricades, and publicist. This is an entertaining, easy read for the experienced reader and a suspenseful, challenging read for those that are new to chapter books. It is the twelfth book in "The Hardy Boys Secret Files" series. Reviewer: Lorraine Donohue Bonzelet
